What Is Somatic Therapy? A Beginner’s Guide to Healing Through the Body

When most people think of therapy, they imagine sitting across from someone, talking through thoughts and feelings. And for many, that’s exactly what helps. But what happens when words aren’t enough? When your body holds onto things your mind can’t quite name?

That’s where somatic therapy comes in.

As a somatic therapist in California, I often work with people who’ve tried traditional talk therapy but still feel stuck. They’re emotionally aware, maybe even good at articulating their struggles—but something still doesn’t feel right. Their nervous system stays on high alert, they carry chronic tension, or they feel disconnected from their own bodies.

Somatic therapy offers a different path—one that includes the body in the healing process, not just the mind.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

At its core, somatic therapy is a body-based approach to mental health. Instead of focusing solely on thoughts and behaviors, it looks at how emotional pain shows up physically—through muscle tension, posture, breath, and nervous system patterns.

Somatic therapists pay attention to sensations, movements, and impulses that arise in the body during a session. You might be asked to slow down, notice where you feel tightness or ease, or track shifts in your breath as you talk. These subtle cues often hold the key to deep, lasting change.

How Does Somatic Therapy Work?

Think of your body as a storyteller. Long after the mind has moved on, the body may still carry the imprint of old experiences—especially when those experiences were overwhelming, scary, or never fully processed.

Somatic therapy works by gently helping the nervous system unwind those old patterns. It might involve grounding exercises, mindful movement, breathwork, or simply paying close attention to what your body is trying to communicate.

Some sessions may feel deeply calm. Others might bring up emotion that’s been held in for years. The pace is always set by you. We go slowly, respectfully, and without pressure.

What Can Somatic Therapy Help With?

Somatic therapy is particularly useful for people who:

  • Feel stuck even after years of traditional therapy
  • Struggle with anxiety, chronic stress, or burnout
  • Carry tension, pain, or fatigue without a clear medical explanation
  • Have a history of trauma—whether from childhood, relationships, or life events
  • Feel numb, disconnected, or dissociated from their body
  • Experience panic attacks or emotional overwhelm

It’s also supportive for people going through big life transitions, recovering from grief, or learning to reconnect with themselves after long periods of survival mode.

What Makes Somatic Therapy Different?

What sets somatic therapy apart is that it works from the bottom up. Instead of starting with the mind and hoping the body catches up, we begin with the body—because that’s often where the root of the issue lives.

You don’t need to have the right words. You don’t need to explain everything logically. In fact, many clients turn to somatic therapy because they’re tired of talking through “the problem” over and over again—sometimes to the point of feeling stuck or even retraumatized.

Somatic therapy offers a different path. One that honors the body’s wisdom, supports nervous system regulation, and helps shift patterns that talking alone may not touch.

Is Somatic Therapy Right for You?

Only you can answer that. But if you’ve been in your head for a long time and it hasn’t brought the relief you’re looking for, it might be time to try something different.

Somatic therapy is the process of returning to yourself. Of listening to your body, trusting your instincts, and learning that healing is actually about listening and attuning, not changing or fixing.
